If the nativity scene in our household in any indication, there's some little known facts about Bethlehem and a certain special birthday that should be brought to your attention.

Atlas Shrugged and Business Time

Did you ever read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand? I read it some years ago. Written in 1957, it's a classic. And it's huge! Over a thousand pages. The dismantling of the railroads and the steel industry. All the major minds and inventors of the era are slowly disappearing from society... Reading today's headlines makes me think of it. Major US automakers on the brink of going belly-up. Bailout after bailout for AIG. These are indeed frightening times.

That's why we must once again seek out the bummer-free zone. While out of town this weekend, I got quite a chuckle every time some old "uncle" (the term used for any elder man, whether related or not) asked me how many kids I had, and after pointing out my two bee-yoo-ti-ful girls would without fail tell us that we need to have a son. Yes, sir. Whatever you say, uncle.

Which puts me in mind of "Business Time" by our favorite kiwis: Flight of the Conchords. My husband and I watched the episode this song was on a few weeks ago. We laughed until we cried. How can these young men know so much about our intimate lives? Is it just us? Or do we all wear those old team-building t-shirts still??

Bummer-free zone: What if this guy had won?

OK, so I don't really know anyone who is truly bummed right now. Most folks 'round here seem to be floating on a cotton candy cloud of blissed-out hope for the future. So happy. But I'm still trolling the Interwebs for a laugh. Just want to keep the high way up high. Now THIS GUY is intriguing. Maybe if Obama doesn't shake out they way we hope this guy can take another run in 2012. I am particularly intrigued by his idea for replacing Congress with a foot-stomping horse.

Old, Grizzled Third-Party Candidate May Steal Support From McCain

Dear Democratic pollsters,

Just so we're clear: I am voting for Obama and Merkley, though I really don't feel all that pumped about the latter, and I PROMISE to drop off my ballot today. I swear it's all ready to go. I'm heading down to the A-Boy ballot box right after breakfast. Signed, sealed and delivered. So please, don't make me dread answering the phone anymore. I feel fairly confident that it will all go our way. I've washed out all the champagne flutes. We're ready for major celebration tonight. Thanks for volunteering! Just stop calling me.

Bummer-free zone: Flight of the Conchords

I recently turned Renee on to Flight of the Conchords on HBO -- of course neither one of us actually has HBO -- so we watch it on DVD. I'm a little bit in love with these guys. The series follows Bret and Jemaine, a couple of daft New Zealanders, as they attempt to navigate life in NYC and make it big. They frequently break out into song. Is it just me, or is their utter cluelessness a complete turn-on? Yeah, it's probably just me. This is 'the most beautiful girl in the room' song.

ReadySetMom now a "bummer-free zone"

In the immortal words of SNL's George W. Bush, we'd like to declare that ReadySetMom is now a "bummer-free zone."

Kudos to Tina Fey -- a role model for working moms everywhere! And let's not forget Amy Poehler (who doesn't appear in this video) but who shows us all how to keep working right up until her delivery date. Enjoy the laughs. We hope to bring a little levity to this site for everyone's enjoyment during these stressful times.
