It's September again. You may find yourself rejoicing that school and soccer is back in session. Or grumbling over packing those bleeping lunchboxes. One thing is certain, once school starts in September life starts to seem like a bullet train: busy, busy, busy, busy, BUSY then all of a sudden it's May. Hold on tight, folks!
Friday, September 5
Multnomah Village First Friday. Great place for a passagiata. 5-8pm.
Big Screen on the Green: Horton Hears a Who at Berkeley Park (SE 39th and Bybee). Free at dusk.
Sandy Oktoberfest. "Honey, where'd I put my lederhosen??" Folk music, kids' activities, crafts and a car show (not sure how the car show fits the theme, unless they are only talking about those fancy-schmancy German driving machines that like to speed down the autobahn). While I'm at it, doesn't "Oktoberfest" refer to the month of October? Perhaps all the local Oktoberfest organizers are just trying to get ahead -- Widmer and Mt. Angel have one too this week! Friday, Sept. 5, 5-10:30pm, Saturday, Sept. 6, 10am to 11pm, and Sunday, Sept. 7, 10:30am to 4:30pm.
Saturday, September 6
Greg Oden's Summer Slam. This is where my husband will be -- throwing elbows, and trash talkin' his way to the front of the line so he can meet Oden. Hopefully some refs will be on duty giving out technical fouls for grown-ups making bad decisions. Don't waste your time meeting Blaze, playing games, or getting distracted by the lovely Blazer Dancers. What you want to do is meet the big man, inspect his right knee and shoot some hoops, man! 11am to 3pm. Rose Garden. Free!
South Waterfront Day. Live jazz, OBT performances, birds of prey show, kid zone games, dog parade and free bike tuneups. 11am to 5pm. South Waterfront Neighborhood Park. Free.
Muddy Boot Festival. Live music, workshops, and kids' educatational activities. $5 general admission, kids 12 and under free. Saturday, noon to 9pm. Sunday, noon to 6pm.
Celebration of Courage Family Festival. Balloons, face-painting, crafts, live music and cake walk. Benefit for the Children's Cancer Association. Noon to 4pm at World Trade Center. Free.
Belmont Street Fair. 10am to 5pm. Free trolley, plus music and entertainment.
Sunday, September 7
Portland Wheelman Touring Club/family-friendly bike rides. All ages. 10am 10miles on Marine Drive bike path. Free. Helmets required. Water and snack recommended. Riders under 18 must have adult.
PAM Family Day. 12:30 to 3pm. Kids free.
$2 Sunday at OMSI
And don't forget about viewing the Vaux Swifts at Chapman School (NW 27th & Pettygrove). Every year I say I'm going to do this, and never get around to it. 6:30-8pm nightly through Sept. 30. Bring binocs and a picnic blanket. Parking very limited in the neighborhood, so ride Trimet (NW streetcar or bus #15 or #17).
Anything else to add to the list? Anyone, anyone?
