My older daughter is a lot like me. I feel I understand her. My younger daughter is a mystery. She's a lot more like my husband, and parenting her is a bigger challenge. That's why I've got the upcoming parent education talk (and preschool storytime) at Rieke Elementary on my calendar.
Next Wednesday, November 28, psychologist Rebekah Smith will speak about "Understanding Your Child's Temperament and Your Own." She will focus on understanding children's inborn characteristics. Parents will look at their own children, and the group will talk about how to address the difficult areas of temperament. Finally, Rebekah will talk about the interplay between children's temperaments and parents' temperaments.
Rebekah has been a clinical psychologist in Portland and Lake Oswego for 20 years. She has a Ph.D. and Masters in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University and a Masters in Education from Harvard. She was a preschool teacher before going for her Ph.D. She has two of her own children, boy-girl twins , of completely different temperaments, who teach her a lot every day.
The parent education talk will be held in the Rieke library at 12:30pm, and lasts one hour. Concurrently, preschool aged children can attend a storytime hosted by volunteer parents in one of the kindergarten classrooms. They will also have a chance to share a snack and work on a small art project.
After this next monthly talk, the following dates are scheduled:
- January 30, 2008
- February 27, 2008
- April 30, 2008
- May 28, 2008

Our family has seen Rebekah off and on. She is wonderful.
