We've talked before about kid music that parents can stomach. Now I want some good music to load onto MY iPod for MY listening pleasure. I go through spurts with music where I listen to nothing except when I'm in the car (usually KINK). Now I am on the warpath for music that moves...moves my body and moves my soul. Music to cook, read, write, exercise and clean to. I recently rediscovered the Down from the Mountain CD, which contains live bluegrass music from and inspired by the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. Am loving Gillian Welch. Loving her. Recently discovered The Weepies -- lovely, mellow, sort of Cowboy Junkies-ish. And then there's Modest Mouse, a band that makes me dance like a lunatic (which makes the kids fall down in spasms of laughter.)
Who are you listening to these days?

have you heard brandi carlile? if you listen to kink then you probably have. she's amazing. i also really like the portland band dirty martini right now. i'm always looking for new (or old) music ideas, so hope to hear what others have to say.

I'm really into John Mayer. I'm willing to overlook the fact that he had a relationship with Jessica Simpson. His music rocks. I'm also enjoying some of Jack Johnson's grown up music (of course I met him from the Curious George movie). Glad to hear Modest Mouse is worth checking out. That song Dashboard makes me want to dance like a lunatic. Glad it's not just me...

We listen to the Old 97's and Ryan Adams stuff a lot. The boys love the alt country, rockabilly thing. We have also started introducing Nirvana(unplugged). They love it.
Modest Mouse is cool. Try the Garden State soundtrack too.

I love Xavier Rudd. He's an Aussie and you hear it in his music. Roots to the magna. I saw him for the first time at nearly 10,000 feet where many musicians have trouble with oxygen and he blew me away somehow managing slide guitar, yadaki (digeridoo), stomp box and singing his heart out at the same time!
He also cares deeply about the earth in a real way and you can hear it in his lyrics. I was listening to a cut off one of his newer albums called "Messages" on my laptop while my newly four year old played on the floor. The song is about how some people just don't get why care of the planet is important. My son looked up after the song had finished playing and said "Mommy, I think that song is about how some people don't understand we all live on the same Earth." Ah, sweet music...

Ben Bonham is from Hood River, he is charismatic and plays a mean one man band! He has a kids cd out called "Kids Only" that is filled with so much blues/jazz undertones that every adult finds themselves tapping their foot. Check him out.
