International Walk to School Day is next week -- are you participating? The event is designed to bring greater attention to the importance of physical activity in children, improve air quality and the environment, and to encourage communities to support safe routes to school. For some, the trip to school is prohibitively far or the route too dangerous for walking or biking, but maybe you could walk part of the way? Some schools have planned big celebrations around this day -- Capitol Hill Elementary will have the mayor and other reps in attendance. If you haven't heard anything about it from your school, ask to see if they are participating (or check the organization's Web site for a list of schools). We'll be walking to Rieke, though it may be a tough sell for my daughter who lives for the moment when the school bus arrives.
