I recently joked with some friends that our lives will now be measured by "before IKEA" and "after IKEA." Lame, I know. I wear it proudly. But there is a palpable buzz throughout Portland over the giant blue box filled with affordable, modern stuff. Let's not go crazy, though. Just because we will soon have IKEA doesn't mean we need to fill our homes with plastic and melamine, right? Shall we develop a mantra? "My life won't lose meaning if I don't have a Hella Jongerius vase." "My children will not suffer over the lack of the Kontant piggy bank." "Swedish meatballs are overrated." Say it with me.
IKEA will open July 25 at 9am. They will allow people to start lining up on July 23 at 9am.

Oh, I'm so with you on this one. But I can't help myself - no long drives to Seattle just to see what is available, no asterisk on-line saying not available for delivery or textiles not at the Seattle location. Can we say "It's raining and cold today, let's take the kids to the play area and meet for lunch?" Yipee!
