I realize I am dating myself here, but do you remember that '70s classic "I am woman" by Helen Reddy? Well, I can't get it out of my head today, do you know why? Well, I'm glad you asked. I'll tell you....
I was resigned to calling Mr. Rooter. He's my plumber. Mr. Rooter Keith came the very day I called about the pipe spewing water all over my basement one dreadful Friday. All the other places I called couldn't send anyone until the following Monday. I'm like - there's water spewing all over here people, I need someone today. So Keith came and saved the day. He also fixed my kitchen faucet when the usual water stream slowed to a trickle. Not much fun washing sip cups when there's no water pressure.
So here's the deal. The toilet in our guest bathroom kept running every time you flushed it. I can get it to stop if I take the tank lid off and wiggle the thing-a-ma-jig a bit - but that's a pain. And we're expecting guests over the holidays. Nothing is more embarrassing than darting into the bathroom after each flush to make sure the water isn't still running. So I was on the verge of calling Mr. Rooter - the phone in my hand, when I remembered we have this home repair manual from Home Depot. I looked up toilet repair, and lo and behold, they claim it's one of the easiest plumbing repairs a homeowner can do. Well, I decided to give it a try. And I'll be darned if not 20 minutes later, I've lowered the water level by pinching the ballcock float with a pair of pliers - and voila! No more running water. I must have saved our household a good hundred bucks or so by fixing that myself!
Sing it with me now: "I am strong! I am invincible! I am plumber!!" Or something like that. Apologies to Helen Reddy. Now I better go tackle that drippy faucet in the kids 'bathroom...

Woo hoo! It's good to feel empowered like that! I'm really impressed at what you were able to accomplish without having to call a professional!

But, I want to know how the toilet repair turned out...

hey there "blocked drain": sorry if the post was unclear. by lowering my water level the toilets stopped running, so mission accomplished. i've since gone on to frustrate myself thoroughly by trying (and not truly succeeding to stop drippy sinks and showers). but the toilets are perfect.
