Portland Children's Museum: Let's Put on a Show!

The Portland Children's Museum is excited to announce a special program for all the Broadway-bound kids! During this great summer class, children will write, produce, and perform in an original musical! Our resident acting coach is a veteran composer and has produced several musicals. Children will experience what theatre is like before opening night!!! Curtains up! 

Class is best suited for 4 years and up.

 Thursdays in July ( 9, 16, 23 & 30) 11am-Noon.

Winter Break Arts Camp at the Curious Comedy Theater

Winter Break Camps will be offered at the non-profit Curious Comedy Theater from the folks who brought you Sometimes Toilet Water: A sketch comedy show for kids and Fruitcake: An Improvised Holiday Classic

Camp Fruitcake!(Session One): December 22-23, 9am-3pm, Grades 2-8 (students will be divided into 2 age groups). Come celebrate all of your favorite winter holidays and some yet to be made up. In this 2 day camp students will create, rehearse, and perform their very own holiday special. Along the way we will play games, do art projects, and build skills in ensemble, improv, and acting. $150

Time Machine 2008(Session Two): December 29-31, 9am – 3pm, Grades 2-8 (students will be divided into 2 age groups). Imagine you in the future. What will you be like? What will you remember about 2008? In this 3 day camp students will reflect on the year and imagine their future selves as inspiration for creating their very own show. Along the way we will play games, do art projects, and build skills in ensemble, improv, and acting. $225

Free Japanese Sing and Play Class for Toddlers

Raising money-smart kids @ Rieke on Nov 13

Rieke parent and investment professional Mark Reynolds will share a presentation on "raising money-smart kids" on Thursday, November 13, at 9:30am at Rieke Elementary's library. The parent educational presentation will focus on investing options for parents of young children, as well as tips on talking to preschoolers about money. Children are invited to gather for stories, art and a snack in an adjacent classroom during the presentation.

Howard Hiton spoke about raising boys at our elementary school, Rieke, last spring in a very well attended and well received event.

Strengthening Our Relationships With Boys: How can we as a community and as individuals connect with our boys and support them? Many boys conform to a strict "boy code" that does not allow them to express emotions. Boys have higher rates of learning difficulties, school challenges and acting out in aggression and anger.

Howard Hiton, MS, LPC, and Kathy Masarie, MD (Parent and Life Coach) will discuss the world boys live in today and unique ways to communicate and connect with them.

Topics of Discussion will include:

• Developmental perspectives on raising young boys
• Problems facing boys today
• Sharing ideas that work for boys
• Compassionate Communication
• Time for open discussion

Free fitness boot camp at the Tulen Center

The Tulen Center is offering fitness Boot Camp classes for FREE during the month of October.

The classes will be taught by trained instructors at the center, which regularly offers training in the Indonesian martial art called Poekoelan. Boot Camp classes for the month will be held Monday through Friday mornings from 7 to 8 am, and Monday through Friday evenings from 6:30 to 7 pm.

Free Rookie Rock class by SoundRoots at Airplay Cafe

Sound Roots is partnering with Airplay Cafe (701 E Burnside) to offer free Rookie Rock classes beginning Thursday, Sept 18 at 10am. This class is for kids ages 6 and under and their folks. Sing modern favorites that appeal to both kids and adults and work on simple rhythm and sound basics. No pre-registration required, just drop in with the kids and have a great time!
