Kids' clothing and maternity swap on November 8

Gather up unwanted, outgrown, clean maternity and children's clothing and accessories and bring them to the swap on November 8, from 12:30 to 4pm at the Central Library.

This swap will be a little different than usual; it will be held during the Keep Portland Weird event at Central Library in Portland. This will be a drop-in swap – bring clothing anytime from 12:30pm till 4pm and swap, then go check out the other events that Keep Portland Weird and come back later to swap some more.

November 8: 12:30 - 4pm.

Sizes: newborn to teen; maternity (only clothing and accessories -- no toys)

Children's Library Story Theater in Central Library.

This swap location is child proofed but space is very limited. Please leave strollers at home, carry babies in a sling, and bring someone to supervise little ones in the Children's Library while you swap.

If you are or you know anyone who is going to have a baby but has nothing to swap, please encourage them to join us, we always have plenty of 0 to 24 month baby clothes and other baby items.

Families and Cohousing Discussion on Nov. 9

Would you like to raise your family in an urban village, in an environment that resembles extended families of previous generations? Come hear what families who live in Portland cohousing communities—or plan to—have to say about raising a family in cohousing at a panel discussion at the Hollywood branch of Multnomah County Library on Sunday, Nov. 9. The event will be held in the library’s meeting room from noon to 1:45 p.m. The discussion is open to the public and children are welcome. The event will be ASL interpreted.

A small, but growing number of Americans seek more connection to neighbors through living in cohousing communities—a type of housing where residents participate in the design and operation of their community. More than 100 such communities are located across the U.S., with about a half dozen in the Portland area and others in Eugene, Corvallis, Bend and Ashland. There will be brief introductions to several Portland cohousing communities by people from those communities.

The event is sponsored by Daybreak Cohousing (www.daybreakcohousing.org) a growing multigenerational community currently building 30 flats and townhomes on North Killingsworth Street in the Overlook neighborhood of North Portland. The Hollywood Library is located at 4040 NE Tillamook St. Several bus routes and the MAX red and blue lines serve the library.

Halloween benefit for Oregon Food Bank on Oct. 31

Campbell Salgado Studio and SpielWerk Community Toy Shop, have decided to team up - and dress up - this Halloween to help raise money to fight hunger in Oregon. On Friday, October 31, 2008, from 2 - 6 pm, costumed babies, toddlers and children are invited to haunt the halls of Campbell Salgado Studio as they sample yummy granola bars, create seasonal crafts, and are photographed in their spookiest Halloween finery. Admission to this fun-filled family-friendly event is free, but Halloween portraits may be purchased for $10 (digital format) or $20 (prints), with all proceeds benefiting the Oregon Food Bank. A food drive barrel will also be on-site for those wishing to make an additional donation of non-perishable food items, providing attendees with an opportunity to make a difference in our community. ReCycle your bicycle on Sunday, Oct. 26

Bring a bike in good condition to Forest Park Elementary on Sunday, October 26 and help the Community Cycling Center, which collects and refurbishes bikes for low-income youths and adults. The event, from 1 to 5 pm, will benefit the Forest Park Elementary school's 5th Grade Legacy Program.

The center is currently seeking children's bikes, ranging from single-speed coaster-brake styles to geared bikes with hand brakes, and adult road bikes with steel or aluminum frames. The center is preparing for its Holiday Bike Drive on December 14, when 500 children from low-income families will receive bicycles, helmets, locks and safety education.

Car Seat recycling on Oct 25 in North Portland

There is another Car Seat Recycling Event in conjunction with a Car Safety Seat Fitting Event on Saturday Oct 25, 2008, from 10am - 1pm, at Legacy Emanuel Hospital (2801 N. Gantenbein, Portland, OR 97227) at Parking Structure #3 (corner of N. Gantenbein & N. Graham).

Bring all used, damaged, expired, and unwanted car seats to this event for free recycling.

Portland looking for community members to serve on CIC

The City of Portland is accepting applications through October 31, 2008, for 12 community members to serve on the Community Involvement Committee (CIC) for the Portland Plan. The Portland Plan is a comprehensive, three-year planning project lead by the City's Bureau of Planning. The purpose of the Portland Plan is to develop policies and actions to guide Portland's growth and development over at least the next 20 years. The planning effort will result in an update to the city's Comprehensive Plan and the Central City Plan.

The charge of the CIC is to review and make recommendations on the public involvement efforts for the Portland Plan. The committee will review past involvement efforts and results and preview upcoming involvement activities. The committee will make recommendations to the Planning Commission and staff on ways to continue or improve its public involvement activities so that they meet the overall goals of the public involvement work program.

The CIC will be made up of three Planning Commissioners and 12 members of the community at large. CIC members should expect to meet quarterly over the three-year period of the planning project. However, in the beginning, the committee may need to meet more often.

Metro Parent's 2nd Annual FREE Education & Enrichment Fair

If you’re a parent, you know that navigating the halls of educational and enrichment programs for your child can be a daunting task in today’s world. There are more options than ever before, making it difficult and time-consuming to choose the right one for your children. Waldorf or Montessori? Language immersion or after-school language program? Music and movement or classical piano?

Metro Parent is helping parents make the research process easier by hosting its second annual Education & Enrichment Fair, on Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 3 to 7:30pm at the World Forestry Center's Miller and Cheatham Halls (4033 SW Canyon Road)

Got boys? Register for lecture on parenting boys on Oct 23

Howard Hiton spoke about raising boys at our elementary school, Rieke, last spring in a very well attended and well received event.

Here's an upcoming talk: "What About Boys?" on Thursday, October 23, 7-9pm. $5.00

Strengthening Our Relationships With Boys: How can we as a community and as individuals connect with our boys and support them? Many boys conform to a strict "boy code" that does not allow them to express emotions. Boys have higher rates of learning difficulties, school challenges and acting out in aggression and anger.

Howard Hiton, MS, LPC, and Kathy Masarie, MD (Parent and Life Coach) will discuss the world boys live in today and unique ways to communicate and connect with them.

Topics of Discussion will include:

• Developmental perspectives on raising young boys
• Problems facing boys today
• Sharing ideas that work for boys
• Compassionate Communication
• Time for open discussion

Mudeye Puppet Co -- free @ Hillsdale Library Oct 25

The Mudeye Puppet Company will perform a new all-ages show called "Gourdy Pumpernickel's Harvest Surprise" at the Hillsdale Library on October 25, at 11-11:45am, then repeating at noon-12:45pm. Free tickets available at the reference desk 30 minutes prior to each show. Seating limited. Mudeye's puppets are made from reused materials.
